Can You Start an MPW RFQ Without GDS?

Yes, the first RFQ can be outline-only

Many teams assume they must finish layout before asking about MPW feasibility or indicative cost. That is not the safest first step. A mature-node MPW RFQ can usually start from outline requirements only.

The goal of the first screen is to answer whether the request is plausible, whether the process family is in range, whether the timeline is realistic and whether the case can move toward a proper NDA and PDK path.

What to include first

A useful first MPW RFQ can include:

• target node or node range
• process family
• estimated die size
• expected sample quantity
• target shuttle or prototype timeline
• packaging assumptions
• wafer probe and test expectations
• company country or region
• end-use context

This is enough to support early screening without disclosing confidential design data.

What not to send at intake

Do not send GDS, OASIS, netlist, RTL, schematics, mask data, scripts, source code or proprietary design files at the first intake stage. These materials should only be exchanged later, after the correct NDA, PDK and partner-confirmed path is established.

This boundary protects the customer and also keeps the RFQ process more disciplined.

Why this matters

The no-GDS intake model is useful for three reasons. First, it reduces unnecessary IP exposure. Second, it lets the screening desk reject or redirect unsuitable cases early. Third, it separates commercial and process-fit discussion from design-detail exchange.

When does GDS become relevant?
