MPW vs Full Mask: Which Tapeout Route Should You Choose?

MPW is usually a prototype and validation route. Full mask is usually a dedicated route for mature designs, larger volumes and stronger production control.

The short answer

MPW is usually the right route when a team needs prototype silicon, early validation or limited samples before committing to a dedicated production path. Full mask is usually the right route when the design is mature, the volume case is clearer and the project needs dedicated mask resources and stronger production control.

The decision is not only about price. It depends on design maturity, risk, sample quantity, timeline, process availability, packaging, test needs and the commercial stage of the project.

What is MPW?

MPW means multi-project wafer. Multiple projects share wafer or mask resources, which can reduce the cost of early silicon access. It is commonly used for first silicon, engineering samples, academic prototypes and early-stage industrial chip validation.

MPW works best when the goal is learning: prove the circuit, confirm assumptions, measure silicon, validate a customer demo or decide whether a next version is worth funding.

What is full mask?

Full mask means a dedicated mask route for one project. The project is not sharing the mask economics in the same way. This route is usually more expensive upfront, but it can make sense when the design is stable, volumes justify the cost and the team needs stronger production control.

Full mask is closer to a production or pre-production decision. It is not usually the first step for a project that is still uncertain.

Practical comparison

MPW is better when:

  • the team is validating first silicon
  • sample volume is limited
  • die area is still being optimized
  • budget is constrained
  • the design may need a second revision
  • the customer needs early proof before production commitment

Full mask is better when:

  • the design is frozen or close to frozen
  • higher volume is expected
  • schedule and manufacturing control matter more than prototype cost
  • the commercial case is already validated
  • the team is ready for a dedicated route

A safer first step

For many mature-node projects, the safest first step is not to decide MPW versus full mask in isolation. The safer step is to prepare an outline RFQ: node range, process family, die area, sample quantity, package and test assumptions, timeline and end-use context.

That brief can be screened before any design IP is shared.

MST helps overseas teams coordinate mature-node MPW RFQs. MST is not a wafer foundry and does not claim to manufacture wafers directly. Availability, pricing and schedule are confirmed case by case with qualified partners.

FAQ

Is MPW always cheaper than full mask?

For prototype silicon, MPW is often lower upfront cost. Final cost still depends on node, process options, die area, packaging, test and schedule.

Can MPW lead to full-mask production later?

Yes. MPW can be used to validate a design before a later full-mask or production route is considered.

Should I send GDS to compare MPW and full mask?

Not at the first step. A high-level RFQ can start with non-confidential requirements and move toward detailed review only after the proper NDA and partner path is clear.

Start an MPW RFQ

If you are unsure whether MPW or full mask fits your project, start with a high-level RFQ. MST can screen mature-node process fit without receiving GDS at intake.

Submit an MPW RFQ or return to the MST mature-node MPW coordination hub.
